WHAT GREAT MEN HAVE SAID ABOUT WOMEN; WHAT GREAT WOMEN HAVE SAID ABOUT MEN - Little Blue Books #77 and #304

Publisher: Haldeman-Julius Company Girard Kansas
Two volumes of the incredible Little Blue Book series by Haldeman-Julius:not dated. Blue paper wraps. 64 and 62 pages respectively. Both consist of literary quotations. Both volumes are in very good condition with only slight fading to wraps: "Men" has faint ink notations at the top of the wrap. Pages are aged, as usual. One price takes both, as these should stay together! The quotes from the men concerning women tend toward loftiness, commending women's beauty, wifely duty, and unrealistic graces. From Milton: "The wife, where danger or dishonour lurks, /Safest and seemliest by her husband stays, /Who guards her, or with her the worst endures." [yeah, right - tell Gingrich] Although now and then there is a sour note, as from Lord Byron: "Oh! ye lords of ladies intellectual, /Inform us truly, have they not hen-peck'd you all?" The quotes from women tend toward the realistic and pragmatic. George Sand: "A man's honour must be very frail, if he cannot make himself respected, without having a sword dangling at his side." And from Jane Austen: "If this man had not twelve thousand a year, he would be a very stupid fellow." Apparent Firsts Paperbound Very Good 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall Little Blue Book

50. L.M. Birkhead
PRESIDENT HOOVER AND QUAKERISM: Little Blue Book No. 1451

Publisher: Haldeman-Julius Company Girard Kansas 1929
Original blue wraps, faded to gray. 32 pages. Birkhead takes a liberal "enlightened" stance in delivering a history of Quakerism, and expounding upon its faults, with speculations on how his religion will affect the Presidency of the newly-elected Herbert Hoover. There are also letters criticizing Birkhead and his refutations and defenses. Religious propaganda either way. Little Blue Books attempted to provide a "University in Print" for the working class. Original editions sold for five cents; later the price increased to 10 and 15 cents each. Many notable authors began their careers in the Haldeman-Julius stable. Many other noteworthy works by the more famous appeared in these booklets for the first time. The subjects covered everything from literature and fine art to basic language and math skills, home improvement, mental improvement, history, and social issues such as abortion, racial issues, religious issues, the KKK, evolution, etc. A truly significant peek at cultural standards in the first half of the 20th century. Paperbound Very Good 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall Little Blue Book
